When the box arrived this morning it was like Christmas in July. Cheesy cliches aside–for reals. I was giddy–in fact I doubt I have come down from the excitement of that moment yet. (though it could be the pure sugar pulsing through my veins…)
What arrived this morning that gave me such gyrating heart palpatations? Bacon Schnecken: the world’s perfect food. I discovered this treat in June at the Fancy Food Show in Washington D.C. Since that fortuitious day, I have been dreaming of the moment we (we=me+schnecken) would be reunited.
I wrote to the founder of Queen City Cookies, the bakery responsible for my salivating day dreams, Peggy Shannon and asked her to please quell the yearning in my heart. Shannon who clearly has an incredible sense of humor told me she would give me membership in the schnecken 12-step program. And of course, ship me a couple of loaves of joy for my upcoming TV segment on July 18 on the ABC affiliate in Phoenix.
Enough background already–I am certain by now you are dying to know how this schnecken stuff tastes right? I’ll try to do it justice:
It’s like biting into a gooey cinnamon loaf, drizzled with caramel and topped with candied bacon. Now, envision sheer taste bud bliss as the buttery, flaky dough combines with the sweetness of the caramel and the slightly salty bacon. Seriously people. Bacon Schnecken is proof that God exists. Or at least that He truly loves us.
Schnecken means “little snail” in German and so the name comes from the spiral shape of the loaf. This treat was a 2012 sofi silver finalist at the Fancy Food Show (the Oscars of food products) and I haven’t the foggiest idea how it didn’t win gold. You were robbed Bacon Schnecken. Robbed I say.
The folks at Queen City Cookies use 10 oz. of European-style Plugra butter per loaf (um…whoa) and nitrate-free bacon. There’s zero junky preservatives–only “buttery bliss and love.”
In addition to Bacon, they offer Schnecken in a wide array of flavors like Apricot, Chocolate, Cranberry Orange and Pumpkin Marshmellow Cream (WHAT?? GIMME!!).
Hell, this stuff has even been featured on the Today Show!
I literally think the clouds parted and pigs playing harps showed up in my office today. It’s a day that will live in infamy. Or at least until I take some home to the hubs tonight and he waxes poetic over the schnecken love.
Want to buy some? Check out their website here for locations near you, or order online. It ships magically and trust me on this one, it may just change your life.
PS. The photo above does NOT do it justice.
Susie, if you came even half way close to doing justice to this wondrous food with your description, I’m sold! This sounds heavenly, truly must be heaven sent. I must try all of them! Glad it was such a special day for you!
