Have I mentioned lately how much I love my job? I get to travel around the state and country eating and drinking on my endless quest for delicious meat.
Not a bad gig. The folks at the House at Secret Garden were anxious for me to try a couple of dishes they are perfecting at their location in South Phoenix.
My husband and I ventured that direction last week and I was not disappointed.
I had been feeling slightly under the weather so I was not in a mood for a gill-stuffing food experience.
We opted to share mussels, short ribs and the brisket sandwich.
I can say with certainty, I have not had short ribs that tender or delicious anywhere before. I was slightly skeptical because upon arrival they seemed very compact and I was concerned they would be tough.
Au contraire. They melted in my mouth. Eric and I were supposed to be “sharing” but I inhaled my half so fast I was onto the sandwich in minutes flat.
The brisket is slow smoked on site and at this very moment, I can conjure up the flavor. Slightly salty with a hint of smoke flavor. This sandwich is served on a crusty baguette with arugula, tomatoes and dijon. It’s served with sweet potato crisps that should be illegal in 48 states as they are highly addictive.
In fact, I can still taste every bite of that meal; it left an indelible impression on my senses.
I tried one of their pork sliders and was not nearly as impressed as the beef preparations–I think the sauce was too spicy for my taste.
Thank you Pat and Dustin Christofolo for a unique and scrumptious meat experience. I am very impressed.
I will be back to the House at Secret Garden. Frequently. They are open daily for lunch and dinner.

Contrariwise, I was very impressed with their pulled pork sliders — the buttery brioche roll, normally a mushy throwaway detail, was instead a highlight, and I loved the touch of spicy coleslaw with ripe chile. I thought the same thing, though, the next day — that I could remember exactly how every bite tasted. Eye-poppingly good, and I am quite fussy about my pork-!
I’m glad you enjoyed! The flavors sure do pop! We may differ in opinion on the sliders but to each his meaty own! Thanks for the comment. Susie
