5 Minutes with Rich Sullivan, Partner, Sunshine Moon Peking Pub
It’s no secret I love good food. I’ve enjoyed Humble Pie and 5th and Wine tremendously, so when Rich Sullivan leaked to me that he was opening a new restaurant in the old Bacon space off Goldwater, I was beyond excited.
Sullivan partners with his wife Dr. Julie Chandler, Scott Yanni and head Executive Chef Emilio Morales on this project. I’ve had a sneak peek at the space and learned about some of the dishes that they will feature.
Sullivan sat down with me last week for an impromptu interview.
How did you get the inspiration for the name?
Our daughter Tallulah was getting into the car and pointed at her mother and said, look mom it’s the moon, it’s the sun, it’s a sunshine moon, don’t you get it?? This is one smart 2 year old… So, Sunshine Moon was born!
What dishes are you most excited for people to try?
White rice. Because it’s good and flavorful and tastes like rice is supposed to taste. Whole grains of rice, nothing broken and not too sticky.
Rumor has it you’ve got a Chinese meat smoker here?
Yes, it’s a La Caja China smoking box. Bobby Flay made them famous and my wife saw it on a show w/ Flay and we had to have it. (lacajachina.com is a meat smoker’s dream btw—lots of smoked meat porn!)
We will do ribs, pork and ham hocks in the smoker. Very excited to try it—going to try some tea smoked duck and chicken as well.
What’s the Wine List shaping up like?
Most definitely the wine list will compliment all the dishes. Wine is an essential part of a great meal, we have wines people will enjoy drinking. Some will balance sweet dishes and other will balance spicy dishes. We’ll feature various Rieslings, Pinot Noirs and a few Shiraz.
Is there a signature Sunshine Moon Cocktail?
There will be a Sunshine Moon Martini and Cosmopolitan.
